Video: Josef Newgarden goes airborne during Indy 500 practice on Thursday

Driver unhurt, cleared to drive shortly after dramatic crash

Josef Newgarden became the second driver this week to go airborne during a practice session at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Newgarden was checked, cleared and released from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Medical Center following the Thursday accident.

The rear end of his Century 21 CFH Racing Chevrolet came around entering turn one, making contact with the SAFER barrier. The car became airborne and Newgarden landed upside down, but was able to climb from the car.

"It's still early for me, I am still trying to gather my thoughts from it," said Newgarden, shortly after the incident. "I got around pretty quick in turn one, it definitely surprised me. I am just lucky that everything is good, the Dallara tub held up pretty well. I want to get back with my crew and see what the damage is and see what we can do going forward."

One day earlier, Team Penske Chevrolet driver Helio Castroneves was uninjured when his car went airborne and landed upside down.
