Juan Pablo Montoya kissed the bricks and drank the milk in Indianapolis today, winning the 99th running of the Indy 500. Montoya was driving the No. 2 car for Team Penske, powered by Chevrolet. He last won the Indianapolis 500 in 2000.

Will Power, in the No. 1 car, and Charlie Kimball, in the No. 83 car, made up the second- and third-place spots, respectively. For the last quarter of the race, it was a constant battle for first, second, and third, with Montoya, Dixon, Power, and Kimball changing spots over and over again.

Here are a few other highlights from the 2015 Indy 500 race:

Right after hearing "ladies and gentlemen, start your engines," the No. 48 car driven by Alex Tagliani did not fire, and he didn't start with the rest of the group. He was allowed to compete once his car fired up.During the first parade lap, Conor Daly's No. 43 car had a small fire, which was severe enough to put him out for the entire race.Right after the first green flag of the race, there was a crash half-way through Lap 1, involving Sage Karam in the No. 8 car and Takuma Sato in the No. 14 car. Karam was pretty peeved about the incident, tweeting some not-so-kind words to Sato.Ed Carpenter (No. 20) and Oriol Servia (No. 32) crashed half-way through Turn 1 on Lap 113. In an interview, Carpenter was upset, saying he "thought that was dirty" that he was blocked going into the turn.Tony Kanaan, who led the race for a long time, crashed on Lap 152, giving up any chance he had at victory. Interestingly, race announcers noted Kanaan was complaining about understeer in his car for a while. In an interview, Kanaan noted that a modification to his car is likely what caused him to crash. The final Yellow Flag of the race occurred on Lap 176, with a three-car incident that put Jack Hawksworth, Stefano Coletti, and Sebastian Saavedra out.
The IndyCar series moves to Michigan next weekend, for the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.Featured Gallery2015 Indianapolis 500IndyCar Indy 500 Auto RacingIndyCar Indy 500 Auto RacingIndyCar Indy 500 Auto RacingIndyCar Indy 500 Auto RacingIndyCar Indy 500 Auto RacingIndyCar Indy 500 Auto RacingIndyCar Indy 500 Auto RacingIndyCar Indy 500 Auto Racing

NHRA Kansas Nationals qualifying results, first-round pairings

Chad Head surprises Funny Car field with second career No. 1

Second-generation driver Chad Head will race for his first career Funny Car victory Sunday at the NHRA Kansas Nationals from the No. 1 qualifying position.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) also remained at the top of their categories based on their Friday qualifying performances and will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

Head captured his second career No. 1 qualifying position and first since 2013 Saturday at Heartland Park Topeka based on his Friday track record time of 3.967 seconds in his Head Racing Toyota Camry. No one was able to improve on his performance Saturday as teams got one qualifying attempt in before rain washed out the final qualifying session. The time is the fifth-quickest run in NHRA Funny Car history.

“You always want to be No. 1 but I am not real accustomed to it,” said Head, who will meet Todd Simpson in the first round. “I’ve only done it twice and it always feels good. I am disappointed that it rained. I would have liked to see us all make another run today. We’ll just have to see how it goes tomorrow.”

Head, son of NHRA legend Jim Head who now serves as his son’s crew chief, says he was surprised that his career-best time remained No. 1 after an onslaught of three-second performances during another unseasonably cool temperature session on Saturday.

"There were a lot of threes in that last session and I expected for us to get knocked off," Head said. "Actually, I was very shocked. There are a lot of good cars, and they made great runs, don't get me wrong. I was just very shocked we didn't get knocked off that No. 1 spot. We were just trying to keep it.”
