Local brewery goes all in to support injured IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe

Flat 12 Bierwerks paints message of support on front of building

One Indianapolis brewery is going to great lengths to support injured IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe. Since Hinchcliffe was involved in a horrific wreck during practice for the Indy 500, many fans have been using the hashtag #GetWellSoonHinch to send the driver messages of support. Flat 12 Bierwerks, located just a few miles from Indianapolis Motor Speedway, took the hashtag and put it at the forefront of their operation. Literally. After the wreck, Flat 12 co-owner Sean O' Connor, who is a friend of Hinchcliffe, had the hashtag painted on the front of his building. "After the wreck, we saw the people at IMS put (the hashtag) on the scoring pylon, and we thought it was a great idea," O'Connor said. "So we got out there and had it painted out front." In addition, O'Connor had 200 T-shirts printed up with the hashtag across the front.

"James has always given so much to his fans, so we wanted to give the fans a chance to give back to James," O'Connor said.  The shirts were sold for $15, with a portion of the proceeds going to a chairty of Hinchcliffe's choice. "We never in our wildest dreams thought we would sell as many of them as we did," he said. "We printed up 200 and they sold out almost immediatly." The co-owner said that Hinchcliffe has been a longtime friend of the brewery, and even helped collaborate on one of their signature beers, which is named after him.  Hinchtown Hammerdown is a pilsner-style beer that has become one of Flat 12's most popular brews. "People love it," O'Connor said. "It's a phenomenal beer; a real easy drinking pilsner that's great for race days. It's a really good beer and James is a great guy. We're proud to be friends with him."

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Toyota dealerships across the country are raising funds for the athletes heading to the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles July 25-August 2.

Toyota announced in April that Toyota dealers are being encouraged to promote Special Olympics and the 2015 World Games through in-store activations and events. Toyota dealer and Team Toyota NASCAR driver, Clint Bowyer is lending his support to the Games and the Toyota program.

"As a Toyota driver as well as a Toyota dealer in Emporia, Kansas, I am looking forward to the opportunity to help Special Olympics USA on its journey to the World Games," said Bowyer in a statement. "Sports have always played an important role in my life and after meeting a few of these athletes earlier this year, I know they are ready to show the world what they are made of!"

Joseph Toyota in Cincinnati was the first dealership to honor a local athlete after the automaker announced it's the official automotive partner of the World Games.

Bocce player Sheryl Fairbanks, whose been competing in the World Games for 40 years in various events, was on hand to collect a $2,000 check donated by the dealership.

Joseph Toyota additionally gave $10 for each customer who came in for service.

"We support it because it's a great event with a lot of human interest and it's really neat to see the happiness Sheryl gets out of the Games," General Manager Dave Reeve told Edmunds.

Kerry Toyota in nearby Florence, Kentucky, will host a similar event for a different local athlete on June 4.

The dealership will host a lunch and a live radio remote to stir up donations.

Kansas City dealerships expect to play it up big as well because Wichita is a big stopping point for the torch relay. Eddy's Toyota of Wichita is in the early planning stages of a celebration on June 23 at the Wichita Wingnuts baseball game.

Toyota is also providing more than 400 cars to transport guests around Los Angeles, for support in the torch relay and for law enforcement.

It's also funding large murals across L.A. to capture the spirit of the Games and launching a Web site to highlight events and athletes at ShareTheJourney.Toyota.com.

"When Toyota decides to support something, it does it in a big way," Reeve noted.

Edmunds says: Toyota dealers go for the gold when it comes to helping Special Olympics.
