Cell Phone-Related Crashes on the Rise, National Safety Council Says | Edmunds.com

ITASCA, Illinois — As motorists prepare for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, they should be aware that cell phone-related crashes have increased for the third consecutive year and now account for 27 percent of all crashes, according to the National Safety Council.

The estimate includes crashes involving drivers who are texting or talking on cell phones.

"The incredible connectivity enabled by technology has resulted in a very dangerous environment behind the wheel," said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council, in a statement Monday.

Texting increases a driver's crash risk by at least eight times, while drivers talking on cell phones are four times as likely to crash regardless of whether they're using a handheld or hands-free phone.

The U.S. Department of Transportation is trying to put the brakes on texting and cell phone use behind the wheel, saying that distracted driving is a dangerous epidemic on America's roadways. In 2013, 3,154 were killed in distracted-driving crashes.

Safety advocates are also calling attention to motor-vehicle safety as the summer driving season begins.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Tuesday launched its 2015 "Click It or Ticket" campaign in advance of the holiday weekend. This campaign urges motorists to use seatbelts.

In 2013, seatbelts saved an estimated 12,584 lives among passenger vehicle occupants 5 years old and up, according to the most recent NHTSA data. Historically, seatbelts saved an estimated 62,468 lives from 2009-'13.

Edmunds says: Put the phone down, buckle up and drive safely this holiday weekend. In fact, why not do that every day of the year?

2016 Ford Fusion Earns Five-Star Safety Rating From Federal Government | Edmunds.com

WASHINGTON — The 2016 Ford Fusion midsize sedan earned the top five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2016 Fusion, which is on sale now at Ford dealerships, received five stars in the front crash test and four stars in the side and rollover crash tests.

The rating applies to front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of the 2016 Fusion and the 2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid.

The 2016 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid also earned the top five-star safety rating from NHTSA but had slightly different results in the individual crash tests. The Fusion Energi received five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not rated the 2016 Fusion, which is a carryover vehicle with no mechanical and technological changes, according to Ford spokesman Aaron Miller.

However, the 2015 Fusion is an IIHS 2015 Top Safety Pick, earning "good" ratings in all crash tests and an "acceptable" rating in the small overlap front crash test. The test is designed to replicate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole.

Standard safety features on the 2016 Fusion include electronic stability control, eight airbags and a rearview camera.

Key competitors to the Fusion include the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers should be aware that NHTSA has not rated the 2016 Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry. However, all of those cars earned the top five-star safety rating for the 2015 model year.

WASHINGTON — The refreshed 2016 Mazda 6 midsize sedan earned the top five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2016 Mazda 6, which is on sale now at Mazda dealerships, received five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the 2016 Mazda 6 the best-possible rating of "Good" in each of the Institute's crash tests. It also receives a rating of "Advanced" for its optional "Smart City Brake Support" frontal crash prevention system.

Standard safety features are carried over from the 2015 model year and include six airbags, antilock brakes, stability control, traction control and brake assist.

On the 2016 Mazda 6 Touring model, standard safety features include a rearview camera and blind-spot monitoring system. The Smart City Brake Support system is part of a $1,675 Technology package that also includes adaptive headlights.

Key Mazda 6 competitors include the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Car shoppers should note that the 2016 Ford Fusion also received the top five-star safety rating from NHTSA. The 2016 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry have not been rated, but the 2015 models received the top five-star safety rating.

Edmunds says: The Mazda 6 is presently one of Edmunds.com's top recommended midsize sedans. Top crash scores make the refreshed 2016 model even more appealing.
