Report: Evo Successor Might Be a Hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is set for the chopping block after the 2015 model year, but there's no need for worry since a successor is on its way. Or is it? More on Motortrend.com:2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR First Test Managing director of Mitsubishi U.K. Lance Bradley hinted to Auto Express that the next Evo could come in the form of a high-performance version of the next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander Sport crossover (called the ASX in Europe). Bradley says that a redesigned version of this compact crossover launches next year in both standard gasoline and plug-in hybrid forms, and suggests that a performance variant would be a candidate to continue on the Evolution nameplate. Details are slim at this point, but this hypothetical high-powered crossover would use Mitsubishi's gas-electric hybrid technology and route its power through all four wheels. Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru expand global Takata recalls by 715k [UPDATE]

Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru expand global Takata recalls by 715k [UPDATE]Chris Bruce

UPDATE: Subaru of America spokesperson Michael McHale tells Autoblog that the company is recalling 78,000 Imprezas from the 2004 and 2005 model years in the US. This is a national expansion of the company's previous regional recall for the Impreza.

The Takata airbag inflator recall just keeps growing. The latest expansion encompasses 715,000 vehicles from Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru. Many of the affected models are in Japan.

The largest expansion from these three automakers comes from Mitsubishi. According to Reuters, the company is adding 100,000 vehicles in Japan and 412,000 outside of the country without identifying any specific regions.

Mazda is issuing safety campaigns for 112,000 vehicles in Japan, and some of these include models that the company produces there for Mitsubishi and Nissan, according to Reuters. In statement to Autoblog (embedded below), Mazda said that it is still evaluating the situation in terms of a possible effect on the US.

Finally, Subaru is calling in 91,000 Imprezas in Japan.

At this time, it isn't clear whether Mitsubishi's or Subaru's expansions affect the United States, but Autoblog has reached out to them for more information. According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, exposure to moisture can cause the propellant in these inflators to ignite too quickly and cause these dangerous ruptures. Takata has also been investigating the problem.

2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Among Vehicles Recalled for Possible Windshield Defroster Problem | Edmunds.com

WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 76,958 cars and SUVs, including the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, for a possible problem with the windshield defroster, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall also includes the 2009-'11 Mitsubishi Lancer, 2010-'11 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, 2010-'11 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and 2009-'11 Mitsubishi Outlander.

"In the affected vehicles, the blower motor may fail," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "Failure of the blower motor may reduce the performance of the windshield defroster, diminishing the driver's visibility and increasing the risk of a crash."

Mitsubishi told federal safety regulators there are no reports of accidents or injuries linked to the recall.

The problem has been traced to "an inappropriate manufacturing process involving the blower motor," said Mitsubishi in a document.

"Initially, if this condition occurs, the blower motor may make an unusual noise," it said. "Continued use of the blower motor over time will result in increased noise and/or reduced blower performance.

Mitsubishi dealers will replace the blower motor. A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.

Edmunds says: Owners of these vehicles should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment. But if you have an immediate concern, it's best to contact your dealer now.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Among Vehicles Recalled for Lighting, Wiper Problem | Edmunds.com

View Full Screen ADVERTISEMENT

WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 53,396 cars and SUVs, including the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, because a problem with an electronic control unit could lead to failure of the exterior lights and wipers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall also includes the 2009-'10 Mitsubishi Lancer, 2009-'10 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback.

"The affected vehicles have an electronic control unit that controls the headlights, taillights and windshield wipers," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "Due to a manufacturing error, the voltage inside this ECU may be unstable.

"Unstable voltage could result in intermittent failure of the vehicle's headlights, taillights and wipers. If the headlights and/or windshield wipers fail, the driver could have reduced visibility. If the taillights fail, the vehicle could be less visible. Either condition increases the risk of a crash."

Mitsubishi told federal safety regulators there are no accidents or injuries linked to the recall.

Mitsubishi dealers will replace the affected electronic control unit. A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.

Edmunds says: The recall is expected to begin within 60 days. Owners should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment. But if there's an immediate concern, it's best to contact your dealer now.

Mitsubishi recalls 130k Lancers, Outlanders over auxiliary glitches

Mitsubishi recalls 130k Lancers, Outlanders over auxiliary glitches2015 Outlander Sport2015 Mitsubishi Outlander SportMSRP$19,595ShopReviewsMore Photos2015 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT 2.4-liter2015 Mitsubishi Outlander SportNew York 2010: Mitsubishi Outlander Sport2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE AWC: Review2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport: New York 20122013 Mitsubishi Outlander SportNoah Joseph

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has has announced two separate recall campaigns for Mitsubishi vehicles, both of them related to problems with their auxiliary systems and covering a total of some 130,000 units. The recalls relate to Lancers (including Sportback and Evolution versions) as well as the Outlander and Outlander Sport, all of them from the 2009 through 2011 model years.

The larger of the two recalls relates to the blower motor that may not to an adequate job of defrosting the windshield and therefor impede the driver's visibility. The recall covers 76,958 units, specifically the 2009-2011 Lancer (manufactured between March 16, 2009, and March 30, 2011), 2010-2011 Lancer Sportback (June 17, 2009, to December 1, 2010), 2010-2011 Lancer Evolution (July 14, 2009, to January 7, 2011), 2009-2011 Outlander (February 10, 2009, to June 22, 2011), and 2011 Outlander Sport (August 26, 2010, to November 19, 2010).

The smaller recall still covers another 53,395 units due to a problem with the electronic control unit tasked with operating the headlights, taillights and windshield wipers. "Unstable voltage" in that dedicated ECU could cause those systems to function improperly – which, again, could impede the visibility and increase the risk of a crash. This recall covers the 2009-2010 Lancer (January 12, 2009, to July 6, 2010), 2010 Lancer Sportback (June 17, 2009, to June 8, 2010), 2010 Lancer Evolution (July 14, 2009, to August 4, 2010) and 2009-2010 Outlander (January 12, 2009, to August 27, 2010).

In both cases the manufacturer is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from the problems. But all the same, in both cases, owners will be notified to bring their Mitsus into their local dealer to have the relevant component (blower motor or ECU) replaced. Since the affected models and model years overlap, we suspect some owners may have both components replaced on their vehicles at the same time, but we're reaching out to Mitsubishi Motors North America for clarification.

If this array of recalled vehicles sounds familiar, you might be thinking of a similar campaign issued last October that covered some 166,000 Lancers and Outlanders from largely the same model years. That unrelated recall, however, related to the drive belt detaching from the engine.
