WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 53,396 cars and SUVs, including the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, because a problem with an electronic control unit could lead to failure of the exterior lights and wipers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The recall also includes the 2009-'10 Mitsubishi Lancer, 2009-'10 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback.
"The affected vehicles have an electronic control unit that controls the headlights, taillights and windshield wipers," said NHTSA in its recall summary. "Due to a manufacturing error, the voltage inside this ECU may be unstable.
"Unstable voltage could result in intermittent failure of the vehicle's headlights, taillights and wipers. If the headlights and/or windshield wipers fail, the driver could have reduced visibility. If the taillights fail, the vehicle could be less visible. Either condition increases the risk of a crash."
Mitsubishi told federal safety regulators there are no accidents or injuries linked to the recall.
Mitsubishi dealers will replace the affected electronic control unit. A date has not been set for the recall. Owners can contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820.
Edmunds says: The recall is expected to begin within 60 days. Owners should wait for their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment. But if there's an immediate concern, it's best to contact your dealer now.
