Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru expand global Takata recalls by 715k [UPDATE]

Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru expand global Takata recalls by 715k [UPDATE]Chris Bruce

UPDATE: Subaru of America spokesperson Michael McHale tells Autoblog that the company is recalling 78,000 Imprezas from the 2004 and 2005 model years in the US. This is a national expansion of the company's previous regional recall for the Impreza.

The Takata airbag inflator recall just keeps growing. The latest expansion encompasses 715,000 vehicles from Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Subaru. Many of the affected models are in Japan.

The largest expansion from these three automakers comes from Mitsubishi. According to Reuters, the company is adding 100,000 vehicles in Japan and 412,000 outside of the country without identifying any specific regions.

Mazda is issuing safety campaigns for 112,000 vehicles in Japan, and some of these include models that the company produces there for Mitsubishi and Nissan, according to Reuters. In statement to Autoblog (embedded below), Mazda said that it is still evaluating the situation in terms of a possible effect on the US.

Finally, Subaru is calling in 91,000 Imprezas in Japan.

At this time, it isn't clear whether Mitsubishi's or Subaru's expansions affect the United States, but Autoblog has reached out to them for more information. According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, exposure to moisture can cause the propellant in these inflators to ignite too quickly and cause these dangerous ruptures. Takata has also been investigating the problem.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mazda3 Showcased in New Mazda Ad Campaign | Edmunds.com

IRVINE, California — Mazda's new "Driving Matters" advertising campaign takes car shoppers on an emotional journey in multiple 2016 models, including the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata and Mazda 3.

The new ads emphasize that driving is fun, not just a ho-hum chore.

"Driving is an experience that can enhance your life," Mazda said in a statement on Thursday.

The iconic Mazda tagline "Zoom Zoom" that debuted in 2000 is part of the campaign.

The first commercial takes viewers on a sentimental rite-of-passage as a young man gets his driver's license, heads off to college, gets married, has a family and buys a new MX-5 Miata in middle age.

The ad features an older MX-5 Miata convertible, a Mazda 3 and CX-5 crossover.

"Through the Driving Matters campaign, consumers will get a glimpse at why driving matters so much to Mazda and why we obsess over every detail in designing our cars," said Russell Wager, vice president of marketing at Mazda North America Operations.

The campaign will also give Mazda, a relatively small player in the U.S. auto industry, better exposure against more mainstream competitors, including the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V and Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Edmunds says: Mazda takes a stand for driving as consumers are on the cusp of the era of self-driving cars. The campaign strikes a universal chord and should resonate well with shoppers.

WASHINGTON — The refreshed 2016 Mazda 6 midsize sedan earned the top five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2016 Mazda 6, which is on sale now at Mazda dealerships, received five stars in the front and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover crash test.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the 2016 Mazda 6 the best-possible rating of "Good" in each of the Institute's crash tests. It also receives a rating of "Advanced" for its optional "Smart City Brake Support" frontal crash prevention system.

Standard safety features are carried over from the 2015 model year and include six airbags, antilock brakes, stability control, traction control and brake assist.

On the 2016 Mazda 6 Touring model, standard safety features include a rearview camera and blind-spot monitoring system. The Smart City Brake Support system is part of a $1,675 Technology package that also includes adaptive headlights.

Key Mazda 6 competitors include the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Car shoppers should note that the 2016 Ford Fusion also received the top five-star safety rating from NHTSA. The 2016 Honda Accord and Toyota Camry have not been rated, but the 2015 models received the top five-star safety rating.

Edmunds says: The Mazda 6 is presently one of Edmunds.com's top recommended midsize sedans. Top crash scores make the refreshed 2016 model even more appealing.

Weekly Recap: Toyota, Mazda team up to 'make cars better'

Weekly Recap: Toyota, Mazda team up to 'make cars better'Plus: Notes On Volvo, The Ford GT, And Top Gear.Greg Migliore

Toyota and Mazda are teaming for a noble purpose: to "make cars better." That's how the two Japanese automakers termed their partnership, which was announced this week.

So what does this actually mean?

The companies said they will set up a joint committee to look for areas of cooperation and named safety and the environment as issues they plan to tackle. From a product perspective, it's believed that Toyota is interested in Mazda's Skyactive engine portfolio. In turn, Mazda has its eye on Toyota's fuel-cell and plug-in hybrid technology.

While more specifics were not confirmed, the companies said the "agreement will go beyond the traditional framework of cooperation," and it has the potential to be a long-range partnership.

"The main purpose of this initiative is to enhance the appeal of our cars," Toyota president Akio Toyoda said at the announcement.

Previously, Mazda has licensed Toyota's hybrid tech and assembled compact cars for Toyota in Mexico. Akio Toyoda said these projects "triggered" the automakers to explore further collaboration.

Dave Sullivan, product analysis manager for AutoPacific, said the tie-up echoes Daimler's wide-ranging work with the Renault-Nissan alliance. "This could be a well-groomed match due to each having very unique skill sets," he said.OTHER NEWS & NOTES

Volvo XC90 FactoryVolvo selects South Carolina for US factory

Volvo confirmed this week that it will build its first US factory in South Carolina, with construction set to begin this fall. The company first revealed plans in March, though it didn't announce a site. The plant will have initial annual production of 100,000 units, though the vehicle or vehicles to be assembled were not specified. The factory, located near Charleston, will open in 2018 and ultimately employ 4,000 people. The facility will help Volvo continue its growth strategy, which includes strengthening its presence in the US market, where it wants to sell more than 100,000 cars per year. "Building a plant in the US is a reflection of Volvo Cars' commitment to the US and the key role the US plays in our growth objectives," Lex Kerssemakers, senior vice president, Americas, said in a statement.

2017 Ford GTFord GT spied on the road

The 2017 Ford GT was spotted testing around the Blue Oval's headquarters in Dearborn, MI, this week. The raw body panels were exposed, and they lacked paint or camouflage. It's the first time the GT has been captured on the street after a spring of auto show reveals. The prototype is missing some elements, like a rear fascia, and it appears to have different mirrors and windshield wipers than the auto show concept. The GT will be produced starting in late 2016 by Canadian specialists Multimatic and will employ a twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Former Top Gear HostsFormer Top Gear trio to host Netflix show?

The former hosts of Top Gear might have new gigs on the horizon. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are reportedly in talks with Netflix to host a show that could be called House of Cars. The report comes from the U.K. tabloid, The Daily Mirror, and it was picked up by a wide range of outlets. The ex-Top Gear Hosts are also rumored to have spoken with another British network, ITV, which rivals the BBC. House of Cars would be a play on the hit Netflix political drama, House of Cards, which stars Kevin Spacey.

Driving impressions are still under embargo for the US-spec 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, but somehow we've conned convinced company PR reps to show the car to you, Joe Public Autoblog Reader. We're enthused about telling you more about the ND Miata, but before we do we'd love to share a Coke and talk about cars.

Here's the skinny. A group of Autobloggers will be hanging out at the Athens Coney Island, in Royal Oak, MI, next Tuesday, May 19. We'll have the car on display from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and we'd love to see you. If you're a Miata owner, we'd also love to for you to bring your car along for the party. The more convertibles the better (just be prepared to have your picture taken).

Go ahead and set your navi for Athens – 32657 Woodward Ave., Royal Oak, MI 48073 – and we'll look forward to seeing you Tuesday. Mazda Geeks unite.
