Refreshing or Revolting: 2016 Chevrolet Camaro

If the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro could talk, it would say, “Look at me now.” That’s because the sixth-gen model has been extensively remodeled from the bottom up with new engines, an upgraded interior, and an entirely new look that comes by way of a tremendous weight loss. Melting away all those extra pounds reveals a more taut and sexy muscle car, which we take a closer look at in the "before and after" pictures below. More on Motortrend.com:2016 Chevrolet Camaro First Look By shedding those extra pounds, the new Camaro’s attractive face really stands out. Before it was redesigned, the Camaro’s front fascia seemed to get lost among the extra bulk, but now we can finally see the newly designed front grille that’s slimmer and more curved than before. The circular headlights are now gone, replaced by new headlights that give the Camaro a more refined look. The lower front fascia also lends a completely different appearance as it spans much wider on the lower front bumper. Available foglights are now LED strips instead of the conventional round ones on the outgoing Camaro. Even though the Camaro lost about 200 pounds, it keeps all its muscle, including its broad shoulders. Since it now sits lower and wider, the new Camaro appears ready to pounce. 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Front End

Chevrolet Dealers Gear Up for 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Showroom Launch | Edmunds.com

DETROIT — The all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro coupe has struck a chord with Chevy dealers, who are eager to start taking orders, and fans, who can't wait to get their hands on one.

The 2016 Camaro arrives at dealerships in late fall. Pricing will be announced this summer.

Judging by dealer reaction to the Camaro, it should be a worthy competitor against the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger.

Tom Henry, of Tom Henry Chevrolet in Bakerstown, Pennsylvania, was at the gala introduction of the sixth-generation Camaro at Belle Isle Park in Detroit and came away impressed.

"I was very pleased with the new model," he told Edmunds. "I think the pictures I saw in advance didn't do it justice. It was the same way with the new Corvette last year: you had to see it in person to appreciate it."

Henry was particularly taken with the interior: "It looks a lot more contemporary while still being luxurious."

But as the head of Tom Henry Racing, well-known for performance upgrades on Camaros and other Chevrolet models, he was also interested in the new Camaro's lighter weight, improved suspension and engine options, up to and including the 6.2-liter, 455-horsepower V8.

"The 2016 Camaro's performance should make it highly competitive against the Mustang," he said, referring of course to the Chevy's longtime rival from Ford. "We've been outselling them for the past five years, so we should be in good shape with this car."

Mark Frost, vice president of operations for Jim Ellis Chevrolet in Atlanta, agreed: "I think the GenSix will continue the sales reign of the Camaro over the Mustang."

Frost told Edmunds that he, too, liked the interior treatment, as well as the sleek new styling: "I believe it is a stunning rendering in the evolution of the design."

Frost also noted: "There's been keen interest in the new model among customers, with a growing list of those who want to be the first. They're going to respond to the look, the cool factor — it doesn't look like everything else on the road — the fuel mileage, especially of the six-cylinder engine, and the safety."

Henry thinks "the initial customers will be a lot of V8 people, probably older buyers who are attracted by performance and the history of the Camaro. But the V6 performs really well, is less pricey and is more economical, so I think that will bring in a younger crowd. Then the four-cylinder model will appeal to economy-minded customers."

He continued: "Everybody seems pretty positive about it. Several people I've spoken with have mentioned the sleek design as a strong point. A couple have already said, 'I'm calling you to order a car.'"

Camaro fans at the Detroit introduction were also enthusiastic about the 2016 model. More than 1,000 of them from across the country turned up for last weekend's event, and they displayed more than 250 personal examples of their favorite car in a parking-lot show that rivalled the nearby Camaro Museum arranged by GM.

Steve Campbell and Chuck Cooley brought their beautiful 1967 Camaros all the way from Idaho to take a parade lap of the Belle Isle Grand Prix course and, of course, be there for the unveiling of the 2016 model.

Like the dealers, Campbell was smitten by the interior of the new model, particularly "the air vents and the air controls."

The 2016 Camaro's unique heating and cooling controls are integrated into rings that surround the air ducts, which eliminates the need for extra buttons and knobs on the dashboard.

Commenting on the new Camaro's exterior styling, Campbell told Edmunds: "I love the front end, especially the new look of the headlights and the dual grille."

It's not surprising that the owner of a classic Camaro would respond to the new front-end treatment. According to Chevrolet, the sixth generation's styling features a "cross-car grille/headlamp aperture, a signature cue that dates to the first generation."

Cooley liked the "sleeker, smaller look" of the new Camaro, plus the fact that "it's lighter and should perform better." He also mentioned the interior as a favorite feature, "especially the interior lighting."

For the first time, the new Camaro is available with a customizable LED ambient lighting system that offers 24 different colors, as well as fade and transition effects.

Cooley told Edmunds: "If I were in the market for a new car, I'd buy a 2016 Camaro."

Edmunds says: Although not even available yet, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro appears to be a winner with dealers and enthusiasts.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro Tantalizes Tuners, SEMA Plans Already in the Works | Edmunds.com

View Full Screen ADVERTISEMENT

DETROIT — The all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro coupe, which made its first public appearance last weekend, is already causing tuners and aftermarket parts specialists to sit up and take notice.

Sure, the new model's available 6.2-liter V8, with 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque - the most powerful Camaro SS ever - is enough to satisfy most enthusiasts. But as always, there are those with a thirst for more performance, and the aftermarket can be counted upon to meet that demand.

John Hennessey, president of internationally known tuning firm Hennessey Performance Engineering, told Edmunds he's excited about the new Camaro being lighter and presumably more nimble than the previous version, making it an excellent candidate for performance upgrades.

"Since the fifth-generation Camaro came out, we've modified more than 5,000 of these cars," Hennessey said. "It's been a beautiful car to work with. For the sixth-generation model, we plan to have performance packages available within 60 days of the release in the fall."

Eric Blakely, a spokesman for longtime performance parts manufacturer Edelbrock LLC, told Edmunds that his firm has been keeping a close eye on 2016 Camaro news and noted it plans to develop an E-Force Supercharger system for the new model.

"We do not have a set date for release at this time, since we will need to acquire a car to begin our development," Blakely said, but noted that Edelbrock's performance upgrades will be "similar in design to our current LS- and LT1-based systems, with similar power gains and performance."

According to the Edelbrock Web site, the company's Stage 3 professional tuner kit can take the small-block V8 engine used in the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette beyond 700 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. So, presumably, the same 6.2-liter LT1, available in the 2016 Camaro SS, can be massaged to a comparable level.

Tom Henry of Tom Henry Chevrolet in Bakerstown, Pennsylvania, told Edmunds that his performance division, Tom Henry Racing, has been offering performance upgrades for the fifth-generation Camaro.

"We have our own branded exhaust system, and we install engine modifications like superchargers," Henry said. "I'm eager to get my hands on one of the new V8 models so we can start work on it. One of the things that helps us beat Mustang is that great Chevy engine architecture. There's a lot you can do with it."

However, since none of the aftermarket and tuner specialists have had a chance to get a close look at the new model yet, it may be a while before you see a 700-hp 2016 Camaro doing a burn out down a road near you.

"It’s too early for us to talk about tuners or aftermarket projects," Chevrolet Spokesman Monte Doran told Edmunds. Nevertheless, he added, "I would expect Camaro will have a fairly significant presence at SEMA this year."

The annual Specialty Equipment Market Association show, scheduled for November 3-6 this year in Las Vegas, is the largest automotive aftermarket trade event in the world, with more than 2,000 exhibitors filling in excess of 1 million square feet of space.

While it is not open to the public, it provides lots of inspiration beyond the showroom.

"Since the Camaro’s inception, there have been thousands of products developed to enhance the vehicle’s styling and performance, and we’ve already received a great deal of interest from our members for the all-new 2016 Camaro," said Mike Spagnola, SEMA's vice president of OEM and product development programs. "We’re currently working with Chevrolet to give our members access to this vehicle in advance of its release and anticipate that the 2016 Camaro will have a strong presence at the 2015 SEMA Show in November."

So, it's a safe bet that Hennessey, Edelbrock and many other tuners and aftermarket parts specialists will bring their A-game to SEMA this year with a tasty selection of performance options for the 2016 Camaro.

Edmunds says: As if an all-new Camaro wasn't enough, we're looking forward to seeing what the aftermarket has in store for one of the most eagerly anticipated cars of 2016.

Driving the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro | Edmunds.com

View Full Screen ADVERTISEMENT

We're about to get some seat time in the newest muscle car on the Detroit horsepower scene, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro.

It was just yesterday that we joined over a thousand Camaro owners at Detroit's historic Belle Isle Park to witness the introduction of the all-new, fully redesigned sixth generation of the legendary Chevy Camaro. The crowds are gone now, but the new Camaro is still here and we have an empty road course at our disposal.

Actually, the Camaros on hand today are preproduction hand-built prototypes of the new muscle coupe. They're even still wearing the camouflage used to foil spy photographers during the car's development. But that's close enough; we don't care about panel gaps right now.

All-New From Top to Bottom
Don't let its looks fool you. The sixth-generation Camaro may look similar to the current car, but the only parts that carried over from the soon-to-be-departing 2015 model are the rear bowtie badge and SS emblems.

It rides on an all-new rear-wheel-drive chassis shared with the Cadillac ATS. It uses aluminum components throughout the chassis, frame and interior, which results in a 200-pound weight reduction compared to the current car.

The new five-link rear suspension system alone knocked 26 pounds off the overall suspension weight. The dimensions have been revised to go hand-in-hand with the diet plan but also to improve handling.

Since the fifth generation of the Camaro debuted in 2010 it has been seen by some as too big and heavy, especially when compared to its rival the Ford Mustang. This time around Chevy made it smaller. The new Camaro is 2.3 inches shorter (188.3 inches), almost an inch narrower (74.7 inches), and its wheelbase has shrunk almost 2 inches (110.7 inches).

Strangely it's an inch taller, however.

Chevy's engineers also narrowed both the Camaro's front and rear tracks and spent a lot of time working on the car's balance, trying to get as close to that magical and elusive 50/50 weight distribution as they could.

A Firsthand Look at the Cabin
As soon as a car rolls up to the pit lane, we hop in to take a look. Despite being a test mule that's missing some interior bits and pieces, the new interior is a major step in the right direction for the Camaro.

The new instrument panel and dash have a slight hint of retro, but if you're old enough to catch these styling cues, maybe you're not the intended buyer. The front, side and rear visibility are about the same as before, which is no surprise as this is a sport coupe, not a family hauler.

Wide Range of Engines
The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will be powered by one of three engines: a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder, which is also used in the Cadillac ATS; a 3.6-liter V6; and the brawny LT1 V8 borrowed from the Corvette Stingray. All offer variable valve timing and direct injection.

Rated at 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, the 2.0-liter engine will deliver 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 6.0 seconds according to Chevrolet. All while delivering more than 30 mpg on the highway. Now GM can claim the most fuel-efficient Camaro ever with performance stats that would leave some of its ancestors in the weeds.

Next up is what will most likely prove to be the most popular engine ordered: the new 3.6-liter V6 rated at 335 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque. Chevy claims it's the highest specific output of any naturally aspirated V6 in production.

At the top of the pecking order sits the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS, which will come standard with the 6.2-liter LT1 V8 that will smoke a set of tires at will thanks to 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. And that makes this the second most powerful normally aspirated Camaro ever, behind the limited-production 2015 Camaro Z28, and the most powerful Camaro SS ever.

All three engines will be available with a new eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission, and of course all Camaros are rear-wheel drive. Although there were some rumors of an all-wheel-drive option with the turbocharged four-cylinder, Chevy hasn't mentioned it…yet.

It's V6 or Nothing Today
All the prototypes on hand are powered by the midgrade V6, which makes more power than the optional L36 big-block 396 offered in 1969. Amazing. This unit also has the new eight-speed automatic, so we immediately put it into manual-shift mode.

Turns out we don't need it. Leaving the shifter in Drive does the job just fine as the transmission bangs off gears at the 6,200-rpm redline and gets plenty of motivation out of the powerful V6. Around the corners, downshifting is dependent on engine speed and how hard we were on the brakes. This is a nice combination that feels right even in this harsh, hammer-down environment.

Speaking of brakes, Brembos are now available on all 2016 Camaro trim levels and we're glad they're on our test cars.

The new 3.6-liter V6 has plenty of power, and despite having a much improved exhaust note, it sounds like a V6. For most buyers, it won't be a deal breaker, but for power-hungry buyers looking to rattle Mustang and Challenger owners, the 6.2-liter LT1 V8 in the Camaro SS will be a necessary upgrade.

The biggest improvement is the weight reduction and handling improvements. According to Chevrolet, the 2016 Camaro SS is faster around a road course than the tricked-out 2015 Camaro SS with the 1LE handling package. We don't doubt it.

With the six-speed manual, the 3.6L V6 feels like a totally different animal and is much more fun to drive. The 3.27 final-drive ratio helps it accelerate out of the corners much more quickly than the 2015 model, and plants us hard into the seat.

Plenty More To Come
Maybe it's just as well we don't drive the 6.2L LT1 at the track; there might have been some carnage. Actually there was carnage, but it wasn't us. Other journalists actually bent a couple of the priceless prototypes.

Our drives were short and the street course was little more than a concrete-lined tunnel, so we didn't exactly push it to the limit. That's for another day.

But our takeaway from the weekend is that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro has gotten back to its roots as an affordable, lightweight, fun, sporty car to drive — regardless of what's under the hood.

We can't wait to drive it again. And we're looking forward to seeing the convertible.

Edmunds attended a manufacturer-sponsored event, to which selected members of the press were invited, to facilitate this report.

It will be interesting to see if the "Skip-Shift" feature is still required on models with the V-8 engine and manual transmission.

The LT (V6) model is said to have achieved close to a 300 pound weight reduction; if true, that should be noticeable. I'm disappointed GM made little effort to improve the limited outward visibility of the current car, but with such an attractive overall design and packaging (especially by not decontenting the V6 model, as Ford did with their newest Mustang), I'm really impressed. 'Can't wait to drive one.

my first impression is that it looks better than the new mustang. it looks smaller and "tighter". proportions seem better. will probably be a better car than the regular GT. i heard another source say they did improve the view outward.
