Expanded Takata Recall To Have Big Impact on Car Shoppers | Edmunds.com

View Full Screen ADVERTISEMENT

SANTA MONICA, California — The expanded recall of vehicles with defective Takata airbags announced on Tuesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will have a major impact on car shoppers, said Jessica Caldwell, an Edmunds senior analyst.

"This recall certainly affects owners, but it also has a big impact on shoppers, especially used-car shoppers," Caldwell said. "We recommend checking to see if there are outstanding recalls on any vehicle before you buy it.

"Shoppers can do this by looking up the VIN at safercar.gov. An outstanding recall is not necessarily a deal breaker but it's smart to confirm with a local dealer that they have the parts on hand to make the fix. If not, inquire how long it might take to obtain them because in some cases, there may be a months-long wait to get the necessary replacements."

U.S. safety regulators ordered Japanese supplier Takata to expand the recall of potentially defective airbags to cover nearly 34 million vehicles, making it the largest automotive safety recall in U.S. history.

The inflators in Takata airbags could rupture, sending metal shards into the passenger compartment and causing serious injury or death, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. At least six deaths and more than 100 injuries have been linked to Takata airbag ruptures.

NHTSA's get-tough attitude regarding the Takata airbag recall was applauded by legislators and safety advocates.

AAA said it supports the "overdue announcement that Takata has agreed to a national recall of driver and passenger-side airbag inflators."

"As an advocate for motorists, AAA believes this recall is a step in the right direction to ensure motorist safety on America's roadways," it said in a statement. "Vehicles are increasingly bought and sold across state lines and may move long distances across the country so AAA believes that it is in the best interest of consumers to expand this recall to all states."

Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), members of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, issued a statement on Tuesday, urging NHTSA to speed replacement parts to dealerships.

"NHTSA must ensure that the necessary parts are manufactured more quickly, and consumers deserve to know immediately whether or not the new parts are also defective, possibly requiring them to have their airbags fixed in another five years," they said.

The NHTSA Web site appeared to be having problems on Wednesday morning.

A NHTSA spokesman did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking when the problem will be resolved.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers and owners need to have the Takata airbag recall in mind before they head out to the showroom, service department or used-car lot.

Takata airbag inflator recall expanded to estimated 33.8 million vehicles [UPDATE]

Takata airbag inflator recall expanded to estimated 33.8 million vehicles [UPDATE]Chris Bruce

UPDATE: NHTSA has officially announced the expansion of the Takata airbag inflator recall to about 34 million vehicles nationwide, and the agency is coordinating with automakers. The supplier is also finally acknowledging that there's a defect with the parts and agrees to a national campaign to replace driver- and passenger-side components.
However, there's no definitive cause yet known for these ruptures, but exposure to moisture for extended periods does appear to play a role by causing the inflator propellant to ignite too quickly.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Takata are announcing that the supplier's airbag inflator recall could be expanding to an estimated 33.8 million vehicles in the US. If that number proves accurate, it would roughly double the current 17 million cars so far recalled and would make this the largest product recall of any kind in the country's history. NHTSA hasn't yet officially confirmed the expansion, but three sources corroborated it to The Detroit News.

NHTSA is holding a press conference later today, and the agency is expected to outline four defect information reports from Takata that would cover both the driver and passenger side inflators in these 33.8 million vehicles. Automakers still need to sift through this new information to ascertain which of their own vehicles are now covered. That process is expected to take a few days, according to The Detroit News. The repairs for passenger side inflators might focus first on high-humidity areas. If later tests show that these are safe, then the total could fall.

Global expansions of this recall from Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Daihatsu were announced last week and affected millions of vehicles. However, a relatively small number of these were in the US. A recent study by Takata found the inflators' propellant could be affected by moisture over time.

The previous record recall was the 1982 campaign to take 31 million bottles of Tylenol off the shelves due to poison fears, according to The Detroit News. We'll update this post as the story develops, so stay tuned.Show full PR textU.S Department of Transportation Announces Steps to Address
Takata Air Bag Defects

Takata files defect reports, enters Consent Order; NHTSA to coordinate remedy program

WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx today announced that at the Department's insistence, air bag manufacturer Takata has acknowledged that a defect exists in its air bag inflators. Takata has agreed to a national recall of certain types of driver and passenger side air bag inflators. These inflators were made with a propellant that can degrade over time and has led to ruptures that have been blamed for six deaths worldwide. The action expands the number of vehicles to be recalled for defective Takata inflators to nearly 34 million.

Secretary Foxx also announced that the Department's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a Consent Order to Takata. The Consent Order requires the company to cooperate in all future regulatory actions that NHTSA undertakes in its ongoing investigation and oversight of Takata. In addition, NHTSA announced its intent to begin a formal legal process to organize and prioritize the replacement of defective Takata inflators under the agency's legal authority.

"Today is a major step forward for public safety," Secretary Foxx said. "The Department of Transportation is taking the proactive steps necessary to ensure that defective inflators are replaced with safe ones as quickly as possible, and that the highest risks are addressed first. We will not stop our work until every air bag is replaced."

The actions expand regional recalls of Takata passenger-side inflators, currently limited to areas of high absolute humidity, to nationwide recalls involving more than 16 million vehicles. They also expand the current nationwide recall of driver-side inflators to more than 17 million vehicles. It's anticipated that the remedy of vehicles will be prioritized based upon risk, with the vehicles that present the greatest risk in terms of age and geographic location to be serviced first.

"From the very beginning, our goal has been simple: a safe air bag in every vehicle," said NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind. "The steps we're taking today represent significant progress toward that goal. We all know that there is more work to do, for NHTSA, for the auto makers, for parts suppliers, and for consumers. But we are determined to get to our goal as rapidly as possible."

The Department has established a new website, www.SaferCar.gov/RecallsSpotlight, to provide regular updates on the status of this and other recalls and of NHTSA's investigation.

Testing and investigation by Takata, auto manufacturers, and independent researchers have not yet established a definitive root cause of the inflator malfunctions. NHTSA's analysis of test results and engineering reports from independent organizations points to moisture infiltrating the defective inflators over extended periods of time as a factor.

Over time, that moisture causes changes in the structure of the chemical propellant that ignites when an air bag deploys. The degraded propellant ignites too quickly, producing excess pressure that causes the inflator to rupture and sends metal shards into the passenger cabin that can lead to serious injury or death.

The agency already has held informal discussions with auto makers and parts suppliers in an effort to coordinate one of the largest and most complex product recalls in history. NHTSA also plans to issue notice of intent to open a proceeding that would coordinate the remedy program for Takata inflators in order to address the highest risks quickly.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Nissan North America is recalling approximately 326,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, including the 2004 Nissan Pathfinder SUV and 2004-'06 Nissan Sentra sedan, as part of an expanded Takata airbag recall, the automaker told Edmunds late Thursday.

The recall involves 250,967 Sentras in the U.S. and 12,725 Pathfinders.

The 2006 Nissan X-Trail in Canada is included in the recall.

Nissan dealers will replace defective Takata passenger airbag inflators in the affected vehicles. The faulty inflators can cause the airbags to deploy with too much force, potentially shooting metal shrapnel at vehicle occupants.

Defective Takata airbags have been linked to six fatalities in Honda vehicles.

"This recall expansion is intended to address vehicles equipped with inflators that are not already subject to previously announced recalls," Nissan said in a statement. "More specifically, this includes vehicles located outside the high absolute humidity areas manufactured between early 2004 and end of production."

Nissan's Takata airbag recalls have expanded to approximately 4 million vehicles worldwide.

The latest Nissan Takata recall in the U.S. begins in June. Owners can contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

No information about the expanded Nissan recall has been posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle safety in the U.S.

Automakers and researchers are still trying to pinpoint the cause of the problem.

Orbital ATK, an aerospace and defense firm, has been hired by a group of 10 automakers to test potentially defective Takata inflators.

Consumers can check to see whether their car is subject to the Takata recalls by entering the vehicle identification number or VIN in the NHTSA recall Web site.

Edmunds says: Owners of these cars should wait to receive their official recall notice and then schedule a service appointment. But if you have an immediate concern, it's best to speak to your dealer now.

2005-'07 Toyota Corolla Among Vehicles in Expanded Takata Airbag Recall | Edmunds.com

View Full Screen ADVERTISEMENT

TORRANCE, California — Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. late Tuesday said it is expanding its recalls involving defective Takata airbag inflators to include an additional 637,000 vehicles in the U.S., including the 2004-'05 Toyota RAV4 SUV and 2005-'07 Toyota Corolla sedan.

"The inflators could potentially be susceptible to rupture when deployed in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants," Toyota said in a statement.

This is part of a larger global recall of about 5 million Toyota vehicles worldwide.

In the U.S., Toyota will recall approximately 160,000 2004-'05 Toyota RAV4 SUVs and an additional 177,000 2003-'04 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks and 2004 Toyota Sequoia SUVs.

Toyota's recall in areas of high absolute humidity launched in 2014 will expand to include approximately 300,000 vehicles, including the 2005-'07 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix and Sequoia; 2005-'06 Tundra and 2005-'07 Lexus SC coupe.

Areas of high absolute humidity include coastal areas around the Gulf of Mexico for Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Louisiana, along with Florida, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii.

Toyota spokeswoman Cindy Knight says: "To date, Toyota is not aware of any injuries or fatalities caused by this condition in the newly expanded group of recalled vehicles (approximately 5,089,000 globally). We have investigated at least eight reports of injuries alleged from Takata rupture events in the field."

Defective Takata airbags have been linked to six fatalities in Honda vehicles. The defect causes the airbags to deploy with too much force, shooting metal shrapnel at vehicle occupants.

Toyota said "multiple investigations" are looking into the root cause of the problem.

Orbital ATK, an aerospace and defense firm, has been hired by a group of 10 automakers to test potentially defective Takata inflators.

Toyota dealers and Lexus dealers will replace the defective airbag inflators with a new one.

Knight says the front driver airbag inflator will be replaced with a newly manufactured inflator produced by Daicel, and Takata will supply the newly manufactured front-passenger airbag inflator.

A date has not been specified for the expanded recall. Owners can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987.

No information about the expanded Toyota recall has been posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle safety in the U.S.

Edmunds says: Toyota is advising affected customers to look for an official notice in the mail to return their vehicles to a Toyota or Lexus dealer for the repair. Those with an immediate concern should contact their dealer now.
