INGOLSTADT, Germany — Audi announced ambitious future-product plans on Friday, saying it will launch the entry-level Audi Q1 subcompact crossover in 2016 and the Audi Q8 flagship SUV in 2019.
It is also developing an unnamed sporty SUV with electric drive, which is set for launch in 2018. The electric SUV will be part of the Q family and compete with the Tesla Model X crossover.
The 2015 Q lineup includes the Audi Q3, Q5 and Q7 SUVs.
"In the coming years, the brand with the four rings intends to expand its range of SUVs," Audi AG said in a statement.
It added: "Audi plans to extend its model range from today's 52 to 60 automobiles in 2020."
The new vehicles are expected to be a key part of Audi's growth strategy in the U.S.
Specific U.S. launch plans, technical specifications and pricing were not announced.
The Audi Q8 targets the BMW X6, Porsche Cayenne and Land Rover Range Rover Sport, along with such newcomers as the Bentley Bentayga, Maserati Levante and Jaguar F-Pace.
The Audi Q1 will compete with the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class SUV.
Audi also confirmed that it will launch the new 2017 Audi A4 sedan in the second half of this year. The A4 targets the BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
Edmunds says: Car shoppers making long-range plans will want to keep Audi's big SUV strategy in mind as the German automaker plans a major offensive against BMW.
