DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2016 Ford F-150 pickup truck will offer a new feature called Pro Trailer Backup Assist designed to make backing up with a trailer as easy as turning a control knob.

The segment-first technology allows the driver to steer the trailer with the control knob, which is located on the left side of the center stack, while the truck steers its wheels and limits vehicle speed.

"Pro Trailer Backup Assist helps take the frustration out of backing up," Ford said in a statement on Thursday.

Pricing has not been announced on the new feature, but Ford spokesman Mike Levine told Edmunds "it will be affordable. It will not be thousands of dollars."

Ford said it has earned five patents for the technology, with 10 more pending.

The 2016 F-150 arrives at Ford dealerships later this year. Pricing on the 2016 F-150 will be announced closer to its on-sale date.

Key F-150 competitors include the Chevrolet Silverado, Nissan Titan and Ram 1500.
