2014-'15 Acura MDX, RLX Recalled for Collision Mitigation Braking System Problem | Edmunds.com

TORRANCE, California — American Honda Motor Co. is recalling approximately 19,500 2014-'15 Acura MDX SUVs and Acura RLX sedans in the U.S. because the collision mitigation braking system may apply the brakes unexpectedly, the automaker said on Wednesday.

"The (system) may incorrectly determine that there is the potential for a forward collision if a vehicle detected ahead is traveling near a metallic structure, such as a metal guard rail or fence," Honda said in a statement. "This could lead (it) to apply the vehicle brakes unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash with following traffic."

The problem has been traced to system software.

No crashes or injuries have been linked to the recall in the U.S., but one crash was reported in Japan.

Collision mitigation braking is a safety system that uses emergency autonomous braking to reduce vehicle speed in the event of an imminent crash if drivers don't take corrective action.

Acura dealers will update the software. The recall is expected to begin in June. Owners can contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238.

No information about the recall has been posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle safety in the U.S.

Edmunds says: Owners should wait for their official vehicle recall notice and then schedule a service appointment. But if you have an immediate concern, it's best to contact your dealer now.
