DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2016 Ford Mustang coupe and convertible will arrive at Ford dealerships in the third quarter of 2015 featuring new packages and options with a retro twist.
Two Mustang trim levels that were popular with shoppers in the 1960s return for the new model year. They are the California Special package and Pony package.
The California Special package is available on Mustang GT Premium. Features include 19-inch ebony-painted machined aluminum wheels, special badging, performance splitter grille and black pedestal spoiler.
The Pony package is exclusive to the Mustang EcoBoost Premium model. It will debut in late 2015 and includes unique 19-inch polished aluminum wheels, tri-bar pony logo on the grille, side strip and chrome window surround.
The 2016 Mustang GT fastback and convertible can be ordered with a Black Accent package. Details include special 19-inch black-painted alloy wheels, black deck lid spoiler, dark taillamp trim and 5.0 and pony logos in black.
Buyers of the 2016 Mustang GT convertible equipped with a manual transmission can order a Performance package. Upgrades include a revised suspension, unique chassis tuning, more aggressive front splitter and six-piston Brembo front brake calipers.
New standard equipment on the 2016 Mustang GT includes the return of hood vent-integrated turn signals. The feature was first offered on the 1967 Mustang.
"These new hood vent indicators are a perfect example of us communicating customer feedback to Mustang engineers and the team responding with an exclusive new feature for owners of the 2016 Mustang GT," said Melanie Banker, Mustang marketing manager, in a statement.
A painted black roof option will be available for the EcoBoost-equipped Mustang and Mustang GT.
Ford has not announced 2016 Mustang pricing.
Key competitors to the Mustang include the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Nissan 370Z.
Edmunds says: Baby Boomers in particular should love the heritage packages and features on the 2016 Mustang.
