Soul Rebel: 2016 Honda HR-V AWD Tested

The HR-V draws deeply on past and present. In many ways, it’s a throwback to the best things 20th-century Honda ever did, such as elegant interiors, sweet suspension tuning, and well-considered details. And then it goes all Kendrick-Lamar-pimpin’-butterflies for its power­train, electronics, even its very concept: This Honda is merely the latest to join the growing ranks of 21st-century micro-utes.

What exactly constitutes a crossover is elusive when shrunk to twerp size. Nissan’s Juke is self-consciously quirky; the Chevrolet Trax is handsomely uncomplicated; Jeep’s new Renegade mixes rugged heritage with adorable details; what exactly Fiat is doing with the 500X is, uh, interesting; and the upcoming Mazda CX-3 looks unpretentiously promising. But even if this is a messy newborn segment whose rules await discipline, the baby crossover is clearly the economy car of right now.

The biggest kid in this space is the exceedingly precious Kia Soul, which sells about 10,000 units a month in the United States, doesn’t offer four-wheel drive, and is marketed with anthropomorphic hamsters. In contrast, the HR-V proffers elegance: restrained interior and exterior design that doesn’t court attention yet manages to be good-looking and substantial anyhow.

Honda hadn’t announced pricing for the HR-V as this was written, only promising that it would start under $20,000 and peak somewhere in the mid-to-high 20s for a loaded EX-L like our test vehicle. The HR-V should be on sale at dealerships as you read this.

Based on the Fit platform and built alongside it at Honda’s plant in Celaya, Mexico, the HR-V is conventional in most of its mechani­cal details. There are struts up front and a torsion beam in the back, and the engine sits transversely under the hood. Like the Fit, the HR-V cleverly tucks its fuel tank under the driver’s seat, where it’s surrounded by protective steel plating.

The HR-V is, however, significantly larger than the Fit. At 102.8 inches, the wheelbase is 3.2 inches longer than its donor’s. And at 169.1 inches, it’s 9.1 inches lengthier overall. It’s also a bit more than six inches longer than a Soul or Juke. But the HR-V is still more than 10 inches shorter than its big brother, the ludicrously popular CR-V.

Larger dimensions lead to some additional heft. This four-wheel-drive EX-L with leather and navigation weighed 3098 pounds —465 pounds more than a Fit with a CVT—which creates the need for some additional power. So the Fit’s pokey engine, a 130-hp 1.5-liter DOHC four, was set aside in favor of pokey-plus. That is, a 141-hp 1.8-liter SOHC four. While both engines feature 16 valves and Honda’s signature i-VTEC variable-valve-timing-and-lift system, only the Fit’s uses direct injection. And the HR-V’s engine looks particularly wan in comparison with the turbocharged 1.6 in the Juke, which is rated at 188 horsepower.

Honda’s build quality is apparent even before opening the driver’s door. The panels all fit tightly on this preproduction test car, the 17-inch wheels look expensive, and there’s no orange peel in the paint. Honda surrounds the entire bottom edge of the HR-V in black plastic—across the bumper covers, along the rockers, and around the wheel arches—making the vehicle look as if it’s riding higher than it is. But the claimed 6.7 inches of unloaded ground clearance (4.7 inches fully loaded) is modest. It’s smart to just stay off the trails.

The cabin is beautiful and well trimmed, and the vent is long indeed. But let's have some real HVAC and radio knobs to twirl, please.

What’s best about the HR-V is inside, including elements such as the straightforward instrumentation grouped under a single binnacle. Simple shapes form the door panels; and the sweet, bright trim around the vents seems downright sophisticated. The seat cushions are short, but the leather covering them is soft and well stitched. After Honda’s goofball adventures into awkward cabin designs (the Civic’s two-tiered dashboard, for example), the HR-V’s restrained style counts as something of a return to form.

Particularly appreciated is the large vent that runs across the dash in front of the right-seat passenger. It’s a true compliment to say it really blows. Problematically, though, most of the usual control buttons are missing in action. In their place is a touch-sensitive five-inch LCD screen and touch-sensitive black panel for the ventilation system. Stylistically, it’s sleekly Bauhaus. Practically, it makes trying to change a radio station while wearing gloves tough.

Redundant audio and navigation controls—real switches—on the nicely padded steering wheel are the driver’s default controls. Why risk frustration by dealing with the touch screen?

2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Recalled To Check Electric Wiring Harness | Edmunds.com

ATLANTA — Porsche is recalling 223 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder cars in the U.S. to check the electric wiring harness for a radiator fan that could be damaged by a carbon-fiber component, Porsche Cars North America said in a statement on Friday.

"The wiring harness will be examined and optimally remounted in the work shop," Porsche said, calling the action a "precautionary recall."

Owners of these cars will be contacted directly by Porsche Cars North America.

The Porsche dealership service appointment "will be arranged as quickly as possible and the inspection will likely require the vehicle to be left in the shop for half a day," the automaker said.

Dave Engelman, a Porsche spokesman, told Edmunds there are no accidents or injuries linked to the recall.

There is no information about the recall posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle recalls in the U.S.

Owners can contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243.

Edmunds says: Owners of these cars can wait to be contacted by Porsche or get in touch with their Porsche dealership now.

2016 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell Gets Minor Upgrades | Edmunds.com

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, California — The 2016 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell adds HomeLink connectivity and two new exterior colors for the new model year, Hyundai Motor America said on Friday.

The new colors are Hydro Blue and Chromium Silver.

HomeLink lets owners open and close garage doors and security gates and control home-lighting systems.

The Tucson Fuel Cell lease program remains unchanged for 2016. The alt-fuel vehicle is available only in California at Win Hyundai in Carson, Tustin Hyundai and Hardin Hyundai in Anaheim.

"Availability of the Tucson Fuel Cell will expand to other regions of the U.S. consistent with the accelerating deployment of hydrogen refueling stations," Hyundai said in a statement.

The U.S. Department of Energy says there are 12 hydrogen refueling stations in the U.S., excluding private stations.

Customers can lease the 2016 Tucson Fuel Cell for $499 per month for a 36-month term, with a $2,999 down payment.

The lease deal includes unlimited complimentary hydrogen refueling and At Your Service Valet Maintenance, a program that is similar to one for the Hyundai Equus flagship sedan.

Customers get a free loaner vehicle when the Tucson Fuel Cell requires service.

The Toyota Camry-sized 2016 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell sedan arrives at Toyota's California dealerships in the fall and is one of the chief competitors to the Tucson Fuel Cell.

Edmunds says: The Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell is still limited to a very small audience, so consumers outside of southern California are playing a waiting game.

It's possible the Lamborghini Gallardo would have had an even grander reputation as an everyday exotic if more people had used it to tow trailers and lug home-renovation materials from store to workshop. Designed as they are to take the driver out of the equation, you might think that the idea of an autonomous vehicle would seem diametrically opposed to that of a supercar. But Audi disagrees. The German automaker has cooked up a series of "piloted driving" concepts that are increasingly focused on performance, and this could be the ultimate iteration yet.

Audi's latest Piloted Driving demonstrator is based on the R8 E-Tron. It's altogether almost identical to the one we saw in Geneva, packing an electric powertrain to deliver 456 horsepower, 679 pound-feet of torque and a 0-62 time of 3.9 seconds. Only in this case, it can do it all on its own, without any driver intervention.

To pull that off, Ingolstadt has fitted this show car with an array of sensors, including a new laser scanner, multiple video cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar transmitters at both ends – all handled by a central "driver assistance control unit."

It's the latest in a series of concept cars that has already included a version of the RS7 Sportback designed to lap the racetrack, and the Prologue concept that drove itself to CES. This concept was similarly unveiled at CES Asia, the Eastern counterpart to the tech expo we usually catch in Las Vegas.

Just what the point is in engineering (or buying) one of the best-driving cars on the market and then handing over its operation to a computer, we don't quite get. But at least we can rest easy knowing that Audi is not giving up on performance as autonomous tech turns the driver into just another passenger.

340 kW of power, 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.9 seconds and a driving range of 450 km (279.6 mi) – Audi has extensively developed its all-electrically powered high-performance R8 e-tron sports car further. The technology study is one of the highlights of CES Asia, and it brings together future technologies – which relate to lightweight design, high-performance drive systems and functions for piloted driving.

The Audi R8 e-tron piloted driving concept car is based on the multimaterial Space Frame of the new production R8. A rear car body module made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) integrates the luggage compartment, which extends the frame structure. The walls of the luggage compartment shell are corrugated, so that they can absorb extreme amounts of energy with little material weight in case of a rear-end collision. Thanks to specific modifications made to the outer shell and wheels, the Audi R8 e-tron piloted driving attains a low Cd value of 0.28. Its front end and sideblades feature e-tron specific lighting solutions.

The T-shaped battery is structurally integrated into the center tunnel and behind the occupant cell – its low center of gravity further boosts the already excellent driving dynamics of the R8 e-tron piloted driving. The high-voltage battery is based on a new lithium-ion technology that has, for the first time, been specifically designed for the drive system of an all-electric vehicle. Compared to the first technology platform, the battery's energy capacity has grown from 49 kWh to approximately 92 kWh. Optimized space utilization and improved battery cell technology enabled this progress without requiring package modifications. Audi produces the high-voltage battery itself.

The R8 e-tron piloted driving achieves an electric range of 450 kilometers (279.6 mi) instead of a previous 215 kilometers (133.6 mi), its energy density was increased from 84 Wh/kg to 154 Wh/kg and several other modifications were made. The high-performance sports car has the Combined Charging System (CCS) on board, which allows charging with direct and alternating current. With this system, the customer can charge the large battery in significantly less than two hours.

The two electric motors each output 170 kW of power and 460 Nm (339.3 lb-ft) of torque to the rear axle. The R8 e-tron piloted driving rockets from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62.1 mph) in 3.9 seconds on its way to an electronically-governed top speed of 210 km/h (130.5 mph) or 250 km/h (155.3 mph), depending on the car's tires. Intelligent energy management and an electromechanical brake system enable high energy recuperation rates. Targeted torque vectoring – needs-based distribution of power transmission between the rear wheels – ensures maximum stability and dynamism.

The R8 e-tron piloted driving technical study is equipped with all of the functions of piloted driving. Data is acquired from the interplay of an array of sensors: a new type of laser scanner, several video cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar sensors at the front and rear. Based on signals from these sources, the central driver assistance control unit (zFAS), a compact central computer, computes a comprehensive picture of the vehicle's environment.

Audi can build the R8 e-tron in handcrafted quality to meet special customer requests. The company uses its high-performance electric sports car primarily as a high-tech mobile laboratory.
