DETROIT — The all-new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro coupe has struck a chord with Chevy dealers, who are eager to start taking orders, and fans, who can't wait to get their hands on one.

The 2016 Camaro arrives at dealerships in late fall. Pricing will be announced this summer.

Judging by dealer reaction to the Camaro, it should be a worthy competitor against the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger.

Tom Henry, of Tom Henry Chevrolet in Bakerstown, Pennsylvania, was at the gala introduction of the sixth-generation Camaro at Belle Isle Park in Detroit and came away impressed.

"I was very pleased with the new model," he told Edmunds. "I think the pictures I saw in advance didn't do it justice. It was the same way with the new Corvette last year: you had to see it in person to appreciate it."

Henry was particularly taken with the interior: "It looks a lot more contemporary while still being luxurious."

But as the head of Tom Henry Racing, well-known for performance upgrades on Camaros and other Chevrolet models, he was also interested in the new Camaro's lighter weight, improved suspension and engine options, up to and including the 6.2-liter, 455-horsepower V8.

"The 2016 Camaro's performance should make it highly competitive against the Mustang," he said, referring of course to the Chevy's longtime rival from Ford. "We've been outselling them for the past five years, so we should be in good shape with this car."

Mark Frost, vice president of operations for Jim Ellis Chevrolet in Atlanta, agreed: "I think the GenSix will continue the sales reign of the Camaro over the Mustang."

Frost told Edmunds that he, too, liked the interior treatment, as well as the sleek new styling: "I believe it is a stunning rendering in the evolution of the design."

Frost also noted: "There's been keen interest in the new model among customers, with a growing list of those who want to be the first. They're going to respond to the look, the cool factor — it doesn't look like everything else on the road — the fuel mileage, especially of the six-cylinder engine, and the safety."

Henry thinks "the initial customers will be a lot of V8 people, probably older buyers who are attracted by performance and the history of the Camaro. But the V6 performs really well, is less pricey and is more economical, so I think that will bring in a younger crowd. Then the four-cylinder model will appeal to economy-minded customers."

He continued: "Everybody seems pretty positive about it. Several people I've spoken with have mentioned the sleek design as a strong point. A couple have already said, 'I'm calling you to order a car.'"

Camaro fans at the Detroit introduction were also enthusiastic about the 2016 model. More than 1,000 of them from across the country turned up for last weekend's event, and they displayed more than 250 personal examples of their favorite car in a parking-lot show that rivalled the nearby Camaro Museum arranged by GM.

Steve Campbell and Chuck Cooley brought their beautiful 1967 Camaros all the way from Idaho to take a parade lap of the Belle Isle Grand Prix course and, of course, be there for the unveiling of the 2016 model.

Like the dealers, Campbell was smitten by the interior of the new model, particularly "the air vents and the air controls."

The 2016 Camaro's unique heating and cooling controls are integrated into rings that surround the air ducts, which eliminates the need for extra buttons and knobs on the dashboard.

Commenting on the new Camaro's exterior styling, Campbell told Edmunds: "I love the front end, especially the new look of the headlights and the dual grille."

It's not surprising that the owner of a classic Camaro would respond to the new front-end treatment. According to Chevrolet, the sixth generation's styling features a "cross-car grille/headlamp aperture, a signature cue that dates to the first generation."

Cooley liked the "sleeker, smaller look" of the new Camaro, plus the fact that "it's lighter and should perform better." He also mentioned the interior as a favorite feature, "especially the interior lighting."

For the first time, the new Camaro is available with a customizable LED ambient lighting system that offers 24 different colors, as well as fade and transition effects.

Cooley told Edmunds: "If I were in the market for a new car, I'd buy a 2016 Camaro."

Edmunds says: Although not even available yet, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro appears to be a winner with dealers and enthusiasts.
